To the market...

Yesterday, we went to New Market to do some gift shopping. It's a smorgasbord of everything you could possibly need, in market form -- fabrics, premade clothes, shoes, kitchenwares, housewares, luggage, toys. And, SO MANY PEOPLE. Everyone is in high gear right now buying gifts for their families for Eid (end of Ramadan); strangely enough, I think we foreigners were buying much less than the Bangladeshis there. A friend told me that it's typical for a family to buy new clothes for, quite literally, all of their friends as Eid gifts. The market itself is a maze -- there's an outdoor ring of shops, and a three-story central market. Some haggling got us reasonable prices on a bunch of beautiful scarves, and another friend got fantastic multi-colored curtains!

This is what the market looked like at about 10 am... this is FEW people and in the outside ring! It was too nuts later in the day to pull out my camera. :)

Later that day, we finally took some group photos back in our apartment. Please excuse the post-market, late-evening, rickshaw+CNG+throngs of people look! I'm still at a loss to find out how women here wear salwar kameez so beautifully, even after spending hours in the heat and humidity!
